Guidelines for Online Students

General Expectations for Online Students

Online courses are just as difficult and may be more time consuming than traditional courses. Online courses typically require watching case study videos, instructor presentations and more writing than traditional classes.

Student interaction mostly occurs through an online threaded discussion, Inbox emails within course, and peer review assignments that allow students, classmates, and instructors to interact every week.

Important Habits for Success

Time Management

  • Commit the same amount of time to an online course as you would a live course
  • Schedule time to meet deadlines
  • Actively participate in online class activities
  • Don’t procrastinate

The Right Technology

  • Have access to a computer with adequate internet service and have minimum technology skills and requirements.

Frequent Participation

  • Post in discussions
  • Read other students discussions and comment frequently during the week
  • Read Netiquette guidelines and syllabus for specific course instructions.

Regular Communication

  • Check communication frequently
  • Discuss any concerns and questions with the instructor.
  • Reach out to instructor or tutors as early as possible for help.

Quiet and Scheduled Study Time

  • Prepare a designated work area that meets your study habits.
