Guidelines and Rules
General
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service that allows qualified patrons to request materials from other participating libraries across the United States. This enables enhanced access and delivery of research and instructional materials not available by the Great Basin College Learning Commons. This service is governed by the Interlibrary Loan Code for the United States and the Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17).
The Great Basin College Library accepts and processes all borrowing and lending requests during our standard hours of operation with the following exceptions:
- Federal Holidays
- Campus and Learning Commons closures
- Finals Week
- Christmas Week
Qualified Borrowers
The following borrowers are authorized to make ILL requests:
- Great Basin College students, faculty, and staff.
- Elko County School District members with a current GBC Library account.
- Great Basin College emeritus faculty.
All interlibrary loan requests must be submitted either through our ILL Request Form or through the EBSCO database Request Access form. All requests will be reviewed and processed in the order in which they are received.
The Great Basin College Library and all interlibrary loan lending libraries reserve the right to decline any interlibrary loan requests for any reason as determined by library staff.
Physical Materials
Physical materials are items such as print books, print journals, physical audiovisual discs, and other materials that can be physically handled and require shipping.
Borrowers may request up to three (3) physical materials at one time and will be contacted via email when material arrives. Due to shipping and processing times, requests will be fulfilled as soon as they are able to be fulfilled. This is usually 7-10 business days, however it can take longer due to weather and other delays.
Due to this, borrowers needing materials for research assignments and projects are recommended and encouraged to submit their requests as soon as possible to accommodate processing and shipping times. The Great Basin College Library cannot guarantee that physical materials will arrive on time if a request is submitted too close to a project and/or assignment deadline.
Electronic Materials
Electronic materials are items such as eBooks, online journal articles, and other digital formatted materials accessed via an electronic device such as a phone, tablet, and/or computer. Borrowers may request up to three (3) at one time and will be contacted via email when they are available. Electronic materials are generally able to be fulfilled within 72 hours.
Physical Materials
All physical material interlibrary loan requests must be picked up and returned to the Great Basin College Learning Commons located in Elko, NV. There are no exceptions. Borrowers who live outside of the Elko, NV service area and/or are unable to travel to Elko, NV are encouraged to contact their local public library for physical interlibrary loan requests at this time.
Electronic Materials
All electronic material interlibrary loan requests can be requested by any qualified borrower. However, electronic material requests may be declined at any time by lending libraries. Many electronic materials are under license agreements that are stricter than U.S. Copyright Law. Due to this, many lending libraries refrain from fulfilling electronic material requests.
Just as we can request materials from other libraries, other libraries can request materials from our library! The Great Basin College Library lends out physical materials from most of our collections and electronic materials under license agreements allowing for interlibrary loan.
The Great Basin College Library tries to fulfill all lending requests to the best of our ability, however we have limitations. We are unable to lend the following resources:
- Non-circulating items
- Materials placed on reserve
- Materials from our Popular Literature collection
- Audiovisual materials
- Equipment
- Oversized materials
- Select licensed electronic resources under publisher limitations and license agreements.
Due to current staff limitations, we are also unable to fulfill requests for physical scans of our print materials.
