Welcome to GBC Child and Family Center. When you enroll your child with us, you are enrolling your child in the only 5-star center in Northeastern Nevada. Our programs are open to ALL members of our community. We have worked hard to create a safe and nurturing environment for young children 2 to 5 years of age. Our curriculum is “child-centered” and promotes the physical, social, emotional, creative, cognitive, and language development of children. Additionally, we work with families as partners in their child’s education and provide community resources as needed.
The Great Basin College Child and Family Center staff views the children as the heart of the program. Each child is an individual who takes an active role in his/her own learning. The teachers provide an age-appropriate environment and curriculum that is supported by a flexible schedule. A balance of active and quiet, large and small group activities, as well as individual one-on-one time promotes development and skill building in all learning areas. Additionally, we work with behavior coaches on implementing proven behavior strategies into the classroom, encouraging the social/emotional development of each child.
Research shows that children learn best through play that is supported by a high-quality environment. At GBC Child and Family Center, we provide the children with opportunities to select activities from a variety of classroom interest centers. They are allowed to plan and carry out their own activities, within the structure of the daily routine, which enables them to become creative self-directed learners and problem solvers.
As a part of GBC, we have the wonderful opportunity of being a lab school, where we help train early childhood professionals in our community, in conjunction with the college’s Early Childhood Education program led by Lynette Macfarlan.
The teachers on our staff are highly educated, with a minimum of an Associates degree in early childhood education or a related field. Additionally, every staff member that works with children at GBC Child and Family center is required to take 24 hours minimum of continuing education credits per year and is required to be CPR and First-Aid certified.
