Great Basin College offers a variety of programs in education. Selecting among them will depend upon your goals and aspirations as well as your educational background.
You are encouraged to meet with a GBC adviser if you are uncertain about which program to select.
Early Childhood and Infant/Toddler Education
In addition, the college offers the following programs designed to qualify students for such employment opportunities as assistants, teachers, and directors in child care centers, preschools, and as home day care providers.
The Associate of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education, is designed for students planning to enter the early childhood education field as either a teacher or preschool facilities director, and/or who are planning to pursue a more advanced degree in the future.
Programs in Elementary and Secondary Education
The following programs are designed to for students wishing to teach at the elementary or secondary level. The GBC Teacher Education Handbook includes program admission requirements and Teacher Education Program application forms.
- Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education. Prepares you for state certification as an elementary school teacher.
- Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education. Prepares you for state certification as a secondary school teacher, with any of the following endorsements:
- Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certificate in Elementary or Secondary Education. Enables students who have completed an undergraduate degree in a field other than education to become eligible for licensure to teach in Nevada.
- Associate of Arts with a Teaching Pattern of Study. Allows for completion of lower-division general education requirements towards pursuit of a Bachelor of Arts degree at GBC, UNR, or UNLV, and prepares students to become a "highly qualified" paraprofessional, as specified by the No Child Left Behind policy.
The following apply to students pursuing a baccalaureate (bachelor) degree at GBC:

For the Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Elementary or Secondary Education degrees, the required grade point average is 2.50.
Appropriate professional and ethical behavior, as defined in the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) code, is also required.
College-wide graduation requirements also apply.

Earning Two Bachelor's Degrees |
You may earn two bachelor's degrees provided that requirements for both degrees are fully satisfied. Please declare your intention to pursue dual degrees with the GBC Admissions and Records office.
The courses taken for the second degree must include a minimum of 32 credits (excluding developmental and community service classes) earned in residence at GBC beyond the credit required for the first degree. Each degree requires a separate application for graduation.
