Welcome to the Nevada Promise Scholarship training. In order to meet the mandatory training requirement, you will have to watch this video in its entirety and complete the acknowledgement form that comes along with it. The training will not be counted if we do not receive that acknowledgement form. The Promise Scholarship is a last dollar scholarship, meaning it is applied after certain grants and/or scholarships have been applied. Those are the Federal Pell Grant, Silver State Opportunity Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant. and the Millennium Scholarship. The scholarship amount varies by student and is posted to student accounts the week classes begin. The scholarship covers registration fees, technology fees, and the student success fee. Everyone that has applied for the Nevada Promise Scholarship is eligible to receive it as long as they complete the requirements. Pay close attention to what those requirements are and when their due dates are. Failure to complete the requirement by the due date will result in a loss of eligibility. Completing this training and submitting the acknowledgement form at the end counts as one requirement. We will not count the training as completed if we do not receive that acknowledgement form. The deadline to complete the training and submit the form is March 1st. The other requirements are applying for admission to GBC, completing a FAFSA and including our school in there, meeting with your assigned mentor, completing 8 hours of community service, and completing all items on your to-do list. Apply for admission to GBC as soon as possible. If you are a dual enrolled student, you do not need to complete this step. There is no cost to apply for admission and this does not commit you into attending GBC. To apply for admission, go to our website gbcnv.edu. A little information about Great Basin College. We serve communities across Nevada. We offer one-year certificate programs, associate degrees, and bachelor’s degrees. We have campuses in Winnemucca, Pahrump, Ely, and Elko. We also have centers across the state. We offer classes online and in person. Here we have listed some frequently used departments as well as the main numbers for the Pahrump, Winnemucca, and Ely campuses. The controller’s office is where you want to call with any questions about your billing statements or to set up payment plans. The academic success Center has live tutoring, placement testing, proctored testing, and computer labs. The Help Desk is who you want to contact if you need assistance with your user ID and or passwords and for basic support for the GBC computer applications. The Help Desk does also have a Frequently Asked Questions section on their web page. FAFSA stands for “free application for federal student aid.” Filling out the FAFSA each year allows college students to access financial aid for college, including grants, scholarships, work study, and federal student loans. The FAFSA is due in our office by April 1st, 2025. Once your FAFSA is submitted to GBC, you will receive an email that will list at least one additional form for you to fill out. This will also be listed in your MyGBC Student Portal under the section titled “To-do List.” All items on that list are due no later than July 1st. Call the financial aid office if you have any question or concerns regarding the FAFSA or the items on your to-do list. To fill out the FAFSA, you will need to go to studentaid.gov and select the FAFSA for the 2025-26 school year. The FAFSA will become available in December. The information they will be asking for is going to be using your parents 2023 tax information. If you do not have a Social Security number please reach out to our office, as there is a separate form you will need to fill out. If you yourself have a Social Security number, but your parents do not, that is okay. You still need to fill out the FAFSA. If you have any questions about this process, call the financial aid office. Some things to keep in mind during this process: check your email on a regular basis. The way we communicate with you is through email. We will send regular reminders as deadlines are approaching. If you used your school email to apply for the scholarship, please reach out to us so we can update that to a personal email address. Once you graduate from your high school, you will lose access to that email and we will not be able to communicate with you. Community service hours will be reported through an online form. We will send that link to you through email in March after the training deadline. We recommend you write down any community service you have already completed so you have it ready when it's time to report on it. You will be asked to enter the date, amount of time, location, and the name of the person that oversaw your community service. You will also need to enter that person's email, since they will be receiving an email asking them to verify the information that you entered was correct. Mentors are assigned to each student in April. You will receive your mentor's name and contact information through email and will be responsible to reach out to that person to schedule a meeting. The meetings can be done in person, over the phone, or via Zoom. The deadline to meet with your mentor is July 1st. Once you graduate high school and you complete all the steps, what happens next? You must enroll in a minimum of 12 credits for the fall semester in order to receive the scholarship. It is best to meet with an advisor to know if you should take a placement test, which degree to declare, along with which classes to enroll in. The scholarship is good for up to 3 years or until you receive an associate’s degree. To maintain your eligibility throughout your time at GBC, you will need to meet four requirements each semester: meet the satisfactory academic progress, report eight hours of community service each semester, meet with your mentor each semester, and submit a FAFSA and complete the to-do list items. Once again, failure to meet any of these requirements will result in a loss of eligibility for the scholarship. Once you enroll in your classes, you get ready to start your college career. Now that you have watched this training, remember to submit your acknowledgement form. You will receive a confirmation email once you have submitted that form. Save that email for your records. If you have any questions, you can reach me by email, phone, or in person, if you're located in Elko. I am found in the Student Financial Services Office inside of Berg Hall. Thank you for watching.
