Mining Rocks – Climb on Board! Find out about the variety of careers in the mining industry and the GBC programs that can take you there! Offered during the Fall and Spring Semester of every year.  Meet with geologists, environmental engineers, diesel technicians, millwrights, and safety and health personnel, just to name a few! Also includes a tour of a mine site.

Career Launch—Talk with the experts about a variety of careers and college programs, during lunchtime!  Offered the first Thursday of every month from noon-12:30.  The program is offered Interactive Video so any GBC site can participate. Non–Traditional Seminar – Turn Recruits into Completers—January 21, 2011 Turn Recruits into Completers - presented by Joan Runnheim-Olsen. This unique workshop is designed for secondary and postsecondary level CTE educators, counselors, and administrators. Participants are engaged and involved with a highly-interactive format, utilizing presentations, self-assessments, role-playing, case studies, and other small and large group activities to:

  • Examine reasons why students drop out of non-traditional classes/programs.
  • Assess yourself, your classroom, and your school for gender equity - and learn some easy "fixes.
  • Discover how to create a positive learning environment for all students.
  • Take away strategies to increase retention in non-traditional classes/programs to help students explore all of their career options, help your program's future, help meet the needs of local employers, and help your school and state meet Perkins IV requirements.

Febuary 4, 2011 – Northern Zone FFA Contest on Great Basin College Elko Campus

March 3, 2011 – MTC Scholarship Parents night 7–8:30. Offered IAV to rural areas.

April 1, 2011 – GBC CTE and MTC Scholarships due

June 6-11, 2011 – Helping Students with Disabilities Succeed in CTE! – presented by Dr. Paul Nolting. Watch for upcoming specific information. Continuing Education credits to be offered.

June 14-16, 2011 – SMAW refresher for Welding Instructors in GBC Service Area. Presented by Jon Licht. Intended for secondary teachers that offer Tech Prep credits as part of their Welding program. Continuing Education credits offered.

Professional Development and In-Service for CTE teachers—Guest speakers on the Elko Campus to provide CTE teachers with professional development opportunities. If you have any guest speakers you would like to see on campus, contact Tech Prep.

National CTE month—Watch for events planned for CTE Month (February) of each year!

College and Career Camp—Come stay at the GBC campus for a full college experience in June. Learn about careers and college programs that may interest you for your future. Students 15-18 invited to participate. The camp includes three days of lodging in Griswold Hall, food, and fun!
